Keto Bulletproof Peppermint Mocha 🍃☕🍫
Christmas-In-A-Mug! 🎄
Because ’tis the season! And because there’s absolutely no need to miss out on this favorite holiday special. Thick, creamy and absolutely delicious, this keto bulletproof peppermint mocha will have you swooning!
Plus, the base is dairy free (yup, paleo approved too!). And depending on the coffee you use, just 2-3g net carbs.
Oh, and yup, this is a play on our much-loved keto bulletproof hot chocolate. 😉
The Deets 🔍
So what’s the trick?
Chia seeds! Yup, blending these fiber-rich nutritional powerhouse leads to an instant thick and creamy mix (with no additional taste!).
So forget those watery mocha mixes. Or the need to add way too much HWC (heavy whipped cream), which (let’s face it) can stall some peeps.
Plus, mixing in some chia seeds is bound to not only add thickness, but also to make you feel fuller. So whether you decide to drop in some grass-fed butter or coconut/MCT oil into your hot chocolate to make it bulletproof, you can count on this hot chocolate to provide quite a bit of nutrition value.
Beats a Starbucks run! 🏃🏿♀️
Cacao vs Cocoa
Both work great. But our favorite will forever be the Dutch-processed alkaline cocoa Valrhona, known to be one of (if not the) best cocoas in the world. But feel free to use a raw cacao powder (arguably more nutritional perks here). Both are well and good, as long as they’re unsweetened.
The Thickener
Chia seeds are awesome. These tiny Mexican guys pack a whole lot of protein and add a whole lot of crunch. Chia seeds contain large amounts of fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, plenty of high quality protein, and several essential minerals and antioxidants.
So if you’re on keto, and having trouble passing (you know, 💩), chia seeds are bound to become your new best friends.
Plus, they just so happen to be an awesome thickener. You might have already met our full-on chia chocolate pudding (or our peppermint special for the holidaze!). But chia seeds do an equally awesome job at thickening up your bulletproof peppermint mocha, without the need of an actual bar of chocolate.
Just be sure to run them in your high speed blender until fully combined. We don’t want any lumps hanging out…! Or you can always use ground chia seeds for easier blending.
The Sweetener 🍯
Pick your poison.
Though do note that we like Swerve or xylitol best here. No funky aftertaste.
Also, this bulletproof peppermint mocha might just be one of the only recipes were the cooling effect of sugar alcohols is much welcome. Fact is, even adding a drop or two of peppermint extract to some sweetener, and subsequently sprinkling it over the whipped cream, is truly fantastic. Think little bits of peppermint-sugar crystals! Optional, but highly suggested.
Fun fact: it might also be our taste buds here, but we’ve noticed that stevia-based sweeteners (such as Pyure) don’t work so great in hot situations (particularly if chocolate is involved). Again, it might just be our taste buds here!
And if using xylitol, make sure to be careful if you have a pup around the house, as it’s highly toxic to the little guys! 🐕

Keto Bulletproof Peppermint Mocha
Ingredients
For the bulletproof peppermint mocha
- 5 g cocoa powder
- 14 g chia seeds *
- 1-2 tablespoons Swerve or xylitol (to taste)
- 1/8-1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract to taste
- 1 tablespoon grass-fed butter or coconut/MCT oil (optional)
- 5 almonds or hazelnuts (think Nutella!)**
- 350 ml hot water **
- 1 shot espresso
Serving suggestions
- whipped cream optional (but highly suggested)
- peppermint 'sugar' optional (but highly suggested)***
Instructions
- Add all ingredients to a high speed blender and blend until smooth. It will likely take a couple runs to grind all the chia seeds fully.
- Serve with (plenty!) whipped cream and sprinkled with peppermint 'sugar'.
- NOTE: Be VERY careful when opening a high speed blender with a hot liquid, as it may create a vacuum. And if using a NutriBullet or similar device, keep in mind that you should not put scalding hot water in it. Keep it warm and blend it only for 10 seconds at a time, allowing the pressure to release every time. If need be, reheat (safety comes first!).

What is peppermint sugar?
Hello! First, want to say I LOVE your website and all your recipes. They’re beautiful! My husband & I have been doing Keto for 4 months now and I’ve lost 40 lbs! Thank you so much… Now have question, I tried your Bulletproof Mocha and it wasn’t dark & rich & thick like yours. It was more light brown and watery. I used your exact measurements. I realize the darkness may be due to the type of Cocoa I’m using. I’ll double next time, but not sure about the wateriness? Could I also sub Almond BUTTER instead of almonds to make it creamier? Yours looks SO delicious. :). Thank you again for such a beautiful website!
I think 5g of Cocoa is more than 1 tablespoon. That might be the deal. What are you using? If possible try the grams instead…..that might help. Just use regular Cocoa, nothing different, also you need a high power blender, can’t use a regular one I believe.
