Paleo & Keto Chocolate Milkshake

An Instant Keto Treat!

If you’re in need of a speedy (or even instant!) keto treat (or summer breakfast!), this chocolate shake is it. Much like our much loved keto shamrock shake, this chocolate version is bound to have you swooning.

Using a high-speed blender here (think bullets) will ensure ultra creamy and smooth results. Just be sure to blend all the ingredients very well before you add the ice!

p.s. Dave Asprey gets full credit for introducing us all to the wonderful concoction that is ‘Bulletproof’. Worth checking out his site for more info and solid products (not sponsored in any way).

The Add-Ins

This low carb chocolate milkshake is very adaptable to your tastebuds and needs. Starting with the chocolate, we love to use a great quality cacao powder here for maximum nutritional benefits (think organic and from criollo beans).

Feel free to add anything from chia seeds for extra fiber (I sure do!), collagen peptides, MCT oil, hemp hearts, and pink Himalayan or flakey sea salt (seriously don’t skip, amps up the flavor a bunch!).

What do you guys add to your morning shakes?!

Keeping this forever! I do the mct and collagen add ins but omit any kind of sweetener at all. I describe it as having my shake “black”. 🤡 I love it but not for everyone. Also, for the past three days I’ve had this for breakfast at 8am, and I have had sustained energy the entire day with no crash and no hunger at all until around three when I get a little snack before dinner. It’s been so essential in kicking my all day coffee drinking addiction.

Fantastic! I was getting tired of avocados. This was a perfect solution! My first attempt I used heavy cream and it started to separate and get chunky. Second time around I used unsweetened almond mild and it came out perfect! I did 1/2 c milk, 2 Tbsp cocoa, 1 small avocado, 2 Tbsp swerve, 1 tsp mct and 6 ice cubes. By the way I stopped to taste it before adding the ice and it reminded me so much of chocolate pudding! I think you may have 2 recipes here lol thanks!

I was 100% convinced the comments were exaggerating. Usually these recipes taste like a substitute to the real thing, but I’ve gotten used to “close enough.” I used heavy whipping cream and added more unsweetened coconut milk instead of water (thought it might be weird but it’s perfect). Added a dash of cayenne and cinnamon from one of the other comments because I love that flavor. ANYWAY. My husband came to check on me in the kitchen because he thought something bad had happened because I kept saying “OH MY GOD” LOL- it’s SO delicious. Beyond comprehension. Tastes better than DQ or any other chocolate shake I’ve had. And it’s KETO!! I used 2 tbsp of Swerve, didn’t want to overdo it. SO GOOD!!!!! Okay I’m back to drinking it now.

Best quick keto desert I’ve had to date. I have come to expect great things from gnom-gnom and this once again set the bar even higher. Simple, fast, delicious!

Wow! Exceeded my expectations! I used Almond Milk (and the Chia Seed suggested add-in) instead of Coconut Milk, and b/c I am not on the Keto diet I used brown sugar as my sweetener. Also used just 1/4 of the Avocado. So surprised at home REAL this tastes! Delish!

Is there any substitute for the avocado? I’m histamine intolerant and avocado makes me ill due to the very high level of histamines. More coconut milk, or maybe a little coconut flour, or xanthan gum? Chia seeds are high in oxalates so I’m trying to avoid them too. BTW, almonds (and almond flour) are also very high in oxalates so don’t eat a lot of that.

If you’re not doing keto and just looking for a healthy chocolate shake, I’d use frozen banana, maybe add a scoop of natural peanut butter too. Then since bananas have natural sugar, you won’t need to add sweetener.

I love this, its amazing! I could taste avocado in the after taste a little, but I didnt mind it. The last one I made I added cinnamon and a little cayenne (just enough to warm the back of your throat), I love how they set chocolate off. With that the avocado after taste went away. Perfect keto chocolate shake!

I tried the milkshake again today at 10 this morning, using half the avocado in the recipe and adding in chia seeds, MCT oil, collagen and a few macadamia nuts. I could still slightly taste the avocado but it wasn’t overpowering and actually quite delicious. The bonus is i had no desire to eat at all for the rest of the day! I still felt full at 6 pm, my usual dinner time. I love this, and that’s saying something since I am not a fan of avocado at all! I think the satiate factor also helps make the slight avocado flavor more palatable. 😂

Delicious and satisfying! I ate it with a spoon, in my comfy place on the couch, and enjoyed it like I was in a Dove chocolate commercial. I did add a full cup of ice/water, making it extra cold. Thank you, Paola, for your creative recipes.

I used this recipe as a guide today for an afternoon pick me up. Instead of cacao I used rum extract and a few cashews and walnuts, almond milk, cinnamon, stevia and chia seeds, collagen peptides. Taste like ice cream! Thank you for the inspiration as always.

I was always hesitant to use avocado in these types of recipes but I’m so glad I tried this one. I am so impressed and so full! It’s been 4 hours and still full. I will be making it again. Thank you!

Going to try making some coffee ice cubes to use in place of regular ice and see if I can sub this shake for my morning cup of joe! Thanks for the recipe!

OMG!!! This was sooooo good. Major YUM!! I did make changes though. I added 1/2 cup of strong chilled coffee. My avocado was frozen and I used 2 ice cubes and the heavy cream. I used monk fruit sugar. This was so smooth and creamy. No after taste. This is a keeper. Thank you for the recipe.

You may have just saved my diet! Holiday family stress that makes me want to stuff myself with sugar. Made this (with coconut cream and coconut milk from carton instead of canned coconut milk, and xylitol) and I thought I had died and gone to heaven. I’ve lost 25 pounds in 9 weeks, so if I make it through the next 2 without gaining I will be happy. Back to strict keto on the 2nd of January!

One of the best shakes on keto! I love the smoothness, the blend of tastes. The chia and hemp are perfect for this shake. And the mint extract gives it the perfect freshness. Thank you for sharing!

I’m going to try this tomorrow morning, and I’m really excited. Can this be meal prepped ahead of time? If so, how far in advance? Days or night before?

      • Gabby says:

I had made it mid day and had some left over so I stored it in the fridge to eat after dinner. When I went to eat it you could see that the avocado had released some water and you could taste the avocado more. It’s kinda like when you make guacamole and it browns. I would not recommend meal prepping this. You want to eat this fresh. All that said, OMG this is the best milk shake! My kids even love it and they are not fans of avocado.

I’ve already made this milkshake a handful of times and it’s my go to keto dessert! So delish and one of the best keto milkshakes I’ve tried by far. Thank you for sharing this awesome treat!
